Welcome to the "Odd Nerdrum Technique Research Pages" by Derek Van Derven

The statistics tell me that many of you want to know Odd Nerdrum's medium. His medium is this. 50% stand oil, and 50% turpentine, mixed. Pretty standard solution. I only use linseed oil as my medium , never turpentine.\ I also saw a person in the statistics that was searching for "odd nerdrum brushes". Odd Nerdrum uses cheap brushes that you could "Get for 99 cents at any art store".

According to one student of Nerdrum they were the worst brushes he had ever seen. They were round hog hair and probably old and course for added texture effects like Rembrandt would use. I see a lot of evidence of Nerdrum using small flats in his paintings, in single tiled bold strokes. Nerdrum uses flats a lot, the fan brush a lot, and brights a lot. I do not see too much evidence of him using "rounds" like the student said.

The statistics also say that you want to know his palette, Here is Nerdrum's palette according to someone who worked with him, a former student. click on the image below. This palette of colors is meaningless unless you know how to use it. It is like me showing you a particular piano, let's say a harpsichord, and I tell you, ok, there is Nerdrum's piano, now play a masterpiece of Mozart. And you have zero experience playing piano. For the best advice on how to use color and different palettes, see my blog HERE. Happy painting and God bless (as Bob Ross would say).

The statistics tell me my visitors are only quickly and superficially looking at my site and leaving, even after they google a term such as "odd nerdrum canvas" or "odd nerdrum materials". If you want to know these things, you have to look at this entire site! Not just the first page. I can't post everything on this page and I already have tried. Anyway, Odd Nerdrum's canvas is "Herringbone Twill Weave Canvas" of interlocking V shapes, heavy weight. He doesn't always use this and as it is linen only, is very expensive.
